The Future is Here!

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has designated 10 proving ground pilot sites to encourage testing and information sharing around automated vehicle technologies. These proving ground designations will foster innovations that can safely transform personal and commercial mobility, expand capacity, and open new doors to disadvantaged people and communities.

The proving grounds will also provide critical insights into optimal big data usage through automated vehicle testing and will serve as a foundation for building a community of practice around automated vehicle research.

The Partners

Automated vehicle (AV) technologies hold unprecedented opportunities to shape the future of mobility. In January 2017, the U.S. Department of Transportation designated ten proving ground pilot sites to encourage automated vehicle testing and disseminate best practices and information. The designees, who were selected from more than 60 applicants, demonstrated that they can provide a mix of facilities and research capabilities, focus on safety, abide by applicable regulations and share their findings. By receiving the federal designation, these pilot program participants can collectively foster innovation and help the USDOT establish guidelines for the safe deployment of automated vehicle technology.
